January 30

I just wanted to post a quick update on where Jules is today. (This is her first full day off chemo!) Yesterday was a little scary (for me) because whenever nurses gave Julie blood transfusions – which she desperately needs as she enters the nadir phase – she would spike a fever.

Because of the potential of an interaction with the donor blood, DH’s protocol is to disconnect the transfusion if a patient spikes and run tests.

(The excellent nursing staff has cultured her blood on an ongoing basis to try to get out in front of infections.)

The thinking at the moment is the fever is either due to her body trying to repair the sores in her mouth, a common reaction to chemo, or the leukemia kicking and screaming on its way out. Whatever the cause, Jules is doing everything she can (drinking lots of water, resting, and using a cold compress on her forehead) to lower the fever.

They were able to give her a transfusion late last night and got another one started now (noon on 1/30) so things have stabilized. Thank god for donors!

And thank you all for sending your prayers, woo-woo good vibes and encouragement!

*hugs*
